The mayor of Port Macquarie, Alderman C.C. Adams said in a radio interview recorded on Tuesday night, that the building of a town hall would not necessarily cause a rise in rates. It can be built from loans and government money, he said. The mayor added that if a rise did occur, it would be very, very small.

The public relations committee members of the municipal council were interviewed on Tuesday night, by Radio 2KM's Port Macquarie representative Nick Erby. Mr Erby's original plan was for a forum with the public relations committee. Aldermen Adams, Matesich and Gott, on one side and the opponents of the town hall - Aldermen Westerweller, Chapman and Kennedy on the other. Ald Westerweller declined the invitation to appear, on legal advice, he said.
The mayor also said in the interview that the town could afford a town hall. He said the money would be raised by the normal procedure - loans.
Ald Gott explained council's plans for eliminating dirty water. He explained that there were two main causes of dirty water: the forcing of the water at high pressure through the town system, thereby picking up sediment from the pipes, and dirty water coming in from Koree Creek.
The high pressure problem will be overcome by the construction of a rising main around the town, whilst the construction of a 20 million gallon dam to serve as a settlement tank will cover the second problem.
Other matters dealt with in the, interview included the petition against the town hall, the revaluation of the town, a possible referendum on the town hall and many other matters of interest to people in Port Macquarie.
Nationwide coverage for Marbuk
The official opening of Marbuk Park on Sunday, by the Minister for Tourism, Mr E.A. Willis, will receive coverage from news media throughout Australia. As well as local press, radio and TV, the opening ceremonies will be covered by a Cinesound Newsreel film team for a 13-week circuit of Australian picture theatres; by two representatives from Mirror Newspapers who will cover the opening for the national women's magazine New Idea and possibly others.
In a generous gesture the owner of Marbuk Park, Ken Underwood has donated the gate takings on Sunday to the Wauchope Q Robin School. Many people will appreciate the chance to help this worthy charity and at the same time see Port Macquarie's latest tourist attraction.
Scholarship presentation
The scholarships, awarded annually by the Port Macquarie RSL Sub-branch and the RSL club to senior students at the Port Macquarie High School, were presented at the high school assembly last Monday. Mr D. Bawden, secretary of the RSL Sub-branch and Mr H. Butler, secretary-manager of the RSL club attended the school assembly to make the presentations. Recipients were: Form VI - Judith Walsh, Graeme Rosenbaum and Kathleen Hollis; and Form V - Barry Williams, Simon Nimmo, Lesley Burgess and Paul Steel. Each student received a cheque for $100 towards educational expenses for the ensuing year. Mr Butler also handed over the annual $500 endowment for the Don Steele Memorial Library.
