Sharing their insights into how to best pack for moving house, Sydney home removalist service Smoothmoves share their top seven moving tips.
1. Sort by room, then by size. Our number one packing tip is to group items together by room or category. Then, sort items by size to allow you to take advantage of all the space inside your removal boxes.
2. Stack by weight. Stacking items by weight when packing to move house works on two levels: First, it keeps boxes stable. Second, it protects smaller items from becoming crushed.
Just be careful when stacking boxes on top of each other, and always take care when lifting heavy boxes.
3. Roll your clothes. Rolling your clothes is one of the best ways to save space, and will also keep them from becoming wrinkled.
While you're at it, another top packing tip for moving clothes is to stuff your shoes with socks.
4. Leave items as they are. Not everything needs to be packed in a box. If your clothes are in a dresser or chest of drawers, for example, you may be able to move the whole dresser or chest with all the contents inside.
5. Do a purge. Moving house is a great opportunity to sort through your things and purge anything that you don't need. Be realistic with what you take to your new house, and dispose of unwanted items responsibly.
6. Wrap the breakables. The best way to pack fragile items for moving, such as plates and wine glasses, is to wrap them securely with paper, clothes, or bubble wrap.
These items should be stood upright inside boxes, or carried separately in a box clearly marked as fragile.
7. Colour code boxes. Colour coding boxes by room can go a long way in simplifying the unpacking process.
Using Post-it Notes or markers, clearly mark boxes with distinct colours such as blue for the bathroom or green for the living room.
Careful packing can make moving house a breeze. Now that you know the best way to pack up a house for moving, it's time to put those lessons to use.
Good luck and happy packing!
