Spring flowering bulbs can be planted this month. The golden rule for bulbs is "buy early, plant late". Bulbs can be stored in the refrigerator crisper for several weeks prior to planting but get in quick as many of the popular varieties are probably already gone and planting should occur now if not already done.
Autumn is all about colour but unlike spring where flowers are the prima donnas of the garden, in autumn it's time for foliage to take centre stage. Take a more discerning look around your neighbourhood and you will see nature's spectacle on show with vibrant reds, golden yellows, outrageous orange hues and mysterious purple tones.
Those trees that display autumn colour are the deciduous trees of the northern hemisphere. The majority of these grow best in cooler climates. There are however some varieties that will colour well even in the more temperate regions. There is something elegant and timeless in the richness of the foliage colours enhanced by the bright autumn sunshine. The temptation to plant an autumn foliage tree is one that requires thought. Some of these trees are not suitable for the average backyard as they can grow into very large trees such as the pin oak.
There are however many dwarf varieties of autumn foliage trees available and now is the perfect time to select autumn foliage trees from your local nursery that show the best colour. Every plant in your garden should be considered an investment and as such, some due diligence before you invest your hard-earned money in a plant is time well spent. Exercise some due diligence and before heading to your favourite nursery take with you the required information needed to make informed plant selections.
Know your soil type, the aspect where plants are to grow; overall size limitations for both height and width and what purpose the plants are required to serve. That way you can be assured that your purchases are appropriate. Autumn foliage are the perfect choice to see the season out in a blaze of glory.
