Speaking as a mother I can honestly say each one of them would be greatly appreciated.
But none are options during the COVD-19 restrictions. Restaurants are closed, travelling for holidays is restricted, and beauty and massage therapists are in hibernation like the rest of us.
So what options are there to pamper mum on Mothers' Day on May 10?
There are quite a few, and I have pulled together some suggestions for anyone looking for inspiration.
Retail therapy: In its usual form - roaming the streets in search of the perfect gift - retail therapy may be a challenge at the moment. Many shops are closed and people are encouraged to stay home except for work or essentials. So why not resort to online shopping? And in the spirit of supporting the business in our community, why not look to which Port Macquarie-Hastings businesses have an online presence.
Flowers: Flowers always go down a treat with mums, but you better get in early as Highlands florists have warned the blooms are more limited this year due to import challenges and costs. The word is, however, that chrysanthemums - the traditional Mothers' Day flower in Australia - is making a comeback. So too are natives. They are being sourced from local growers and they are looking beautiful.
Breakfast in bed: Mums love the chance to not have to prepare a meal - especially breakfast. If someone else in the family can cook up a treat - bacon and eggs, pancakes, even toast with a cup of tea - it is sure to be well received by mum. And if she can have it delivered to her while she is still relaxing in bed, well that is even better. What ever you do, don't forget the cup of tea or coffee. Furthermore, it is only special if you also clean the kitchen after you have cooked. No mum wants to be faced with a messy kitchen first thing in the morning.
Crafty gifts: Some of the best gifts...and cards are those that are made with love. Sure you may need to grab some cardboard and craft items (paints, fabric etc) from a nearby store. Just remember get in and get out with what you need as quickly as possible. Then head home to get creative. Or, paint your mum the perfect Mother's Day present this May.
High tea at home: High tea is a fun thing to do, but with the current social restrictions mums everywhere have been missing out on treats like this. Why not create your own high tea at home. You can either get busy in the kitchen making tasty sweet and savoury treats. (Remember if you do, clean up after yourself). Or you could find out what local food outlets are preparing for takeaways at the moment. This is a good option because you are supporting local business while treating mum. Remember a good high tea features a mix of bite size offerings - sweet and savoury. You can put a very personal touch by including some of mum's favourite foods - mini quiches, mini sausage rolls, finger sandwiches, macaroons, a cheesecake bite, scones with jam and cream...the options are endless. With regard to those scones check out this easy recipe that has been gaining popularity worldwide.
