Scammers are constantly finding new ways to defraud people which costs Australians hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
The latest scam involved a person, claiming to be from Centrelink, calling local residents to offer an electricity rebate for pensioners.
He asked the elderly lady to buy a Google Play Card valued at $300 from a local shopping centre. He said he would call at 11am the next day to confirm the transaction.
The $300 once exchanged would ensure a year free from paying electricity bills. The man also asked for her pensioner concession card number and expiry date.
I'm happy to report in this instance the lady didn't fall for the scam and ended the phone call.
You should never give out personal information to anyone claiming to be offering some sort of deal. If it sounds too good to be true it is.
If you've been scammed, think someone is trying to scam you, or have been the victim of a cybercrime, you can it report online at: service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/report-scam-or-cybercrime or the ACCC: scamwatch.gov.au/ or on 1300 795 995.
World Cup legacy inspires next generation
Local cricket clubs and councils are set to capitalise on the success of Australia's recent Women's T20 World Cup victory with applications now open for the final round of the NSW ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund.
Securing funding will help improve the quality and quantity of cricket facilities and programs across the region.
Off the back of a fantastic ICC T20 Women's World Cup, which saw Australia defend its title, the Legacy Fund will help inspire the next generation of community cricketers.
The T20 Legacy Fund will ensure communities across the state will reap the benefits of hosting a World Cup and I encourage clubs, associations and councils to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.
Applications for the fund are open until August 24.
