The first events are scheduled in Coffs Harbour on Sunday, October 4 and in Port Macquarie on Saturday, October 31. Registrations have already opened for prospective players of any age or gender.

Three-on-three is developed from fast-paced street basketball and played using half a regular five-a-side basketball court. Each team of four (three players and one substitute) shoots for a single hoop.

There is no break after a goal or foul, and the team on offence must take a shot within 12 seconds from possession of the ball.

A shot made outside the three-point line earns two points and those inside earn one point. The winning team has the highest score at the end of 10 minutes or if 21 points is reached first.

North Coast Basketball coach Rob Linton said the new series gives another option for basketballers across the Hastings and Mid North Coast.

"The growth of three-on-three basketball over the past few years has been phenomenal, and we can't wait to introduce the sport to players of all ages on the Mid-North Coast," Mr Linton said.

"The Mid-North Coast has always been home to a lot of talented young players, and I am looking forward to selecting the best players in the region to compete at the 3x3Hustle National Championships each year."

Three by three basketball has only recently been made official with its Olympic debut scheduled for 2021 and Commonwealth Games debut expected in 2022.

The Australian women's team is competing in an Olympic Qualifying Tournament in May next year in Austria after winning the Asia Cup in 2019 and coming fourth at the World Cup.
