The 50-year-old was arrested at his home at Gunnedah in northeast NSW on Wednesday.
Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad's Child Exploitation Internet Unit say they began engaging online with the man earlier this month.
Police allege the man believed he was speaking with a 13-year-old girl and had explicit conversations about acts he wanted to perform on the child, and also sent sexually explicit material.
The man was charged with eight offences, was refused bail and will appear in Tamworth Local Court on Thursday.
