The Bonny Hills Tennis Club has implemented a contemporary coaching program to ensure juniors learn the game and improve their skills in a fun environment.
Club coaches Geoff and Janie Carter said they are very enthusiastic and excited about the rise of tennis in the area.
"We knew the potential was there and tennis is such a great game to learn early. Its often called the 'game for life' because once you can play, you have the skills to enjoy the game for the rest of your life," Mr Carter said.
"There are few sports which provide the social, mental and physical benefits in an inexpensive game that can be played by the whole family. Once you can play at a basic standard the fun really begins."
Mr Carter said tennis is not just about hitting a ball, it promotes movement skills, fitness and agility, spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination and thinking quickly.
"The benefits go far beyond just swinging a racquet. Moreover, the opportunity to make new friends and share a great outdoor experience with other kids makes the sport a great option," Mr Carter said.
"Popularity of the game declined for a while as for many, the physical requirements seemed too difficult. But tennis as a sport has cleverly addressed this and now there is a progressive pathway that makes the game much more accessible and enjoyable."
Hot Shots Tennis programs are available for children as young as three-years-old using modified equipment such as lower nets, shorter and lighter racquets, lower compression balls that bounce lower and slower.
"Tennis coaching is all about maximum fun. The modern way is to implement a game and play based approach to learning, no more standing in a line waiting your turn to hit a ball," Mr Carter said.
"The emphasis is on learning to hold a rally, being able to serve and knowing how to score. The tennis experience really comes alive when you can hold an exciting rally with your family or friends.
"At Bonny Hills we run blue ball with foundation movement skills as an introduction to tennis for three to five year olds, red ball for five to eight year olds, orange ball for eight to 10 year olds and green ball for ten to 12 and over."
Mr Carter said the future of tennis in Australia looks bright with successful role models such as female tennis player Ash Barty winning at the high levels of international competition.
"The experience at Bonny Hills Tennis Club is a good reflection of this rise in the sport. If you drive down Ocean Drive and take a glance into the beautiful courts there are signs out, banners waving in the breeze, music playing and kids running around having a ball," he said.
"A pretty good outcome for the Bonny Hills community and for junior sport in the local area."
