* COVID-positive people in southwest Sydney have been working in the community and mingling with family members, prompting a major uptick in local cases, as the NSW government extends the city's lockdown by a week.

* NSW recorded 27 new local COVID-19 cases in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday as Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced a widely anticipated extension of the lockdown for Greater Sydney until at least July 16.

* Students who were due to return from holidays next week will mostly learn from home, but schools will be open for children of essential workers.

* Ms Berejiklian warned case numbers would spike in the coming days due to the highly infectious Delta strain spreading rapidly in the local government areas of Fairfield, Liverpool and Canterbury-Bankstown.

* She said if the situation further deteriorates in those communities, harsher localised restrictions could come into force.

* The decision to extend the lockdown has left Sydney's hospitality, entertainment and travel businesses "devastated".

* 6,496,236 first doses (31.5 per cent of Australians 16 and over), 2,023,638 second doses (9.81 per cent)

* Of the total, 4,865,936 have been administered by the Commonwealth (an increase of +85,631 in the previous 24 hours).

* 3,701,730 have been administered by the states and territories, including 79,844 in the previous 24 hours.

* 1,216,248 have been administered in Victoria (+26,540), 962,785 in NSW (+20,564), 642,811 in Queensland (+14,997), 333,632 in Western Australia (+7391), 261,593 in South Australia (+5071), 123,629 in Tasmania (+2298), 94,157 in the ACT (+1486) and 66,875 in the NT (+1497).

AUSTRALIAN CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS:

* Australia reported 28 local cases on Wednesday: 27 in NSW and one in Queensland.
