NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) personel are busy preparing for the storm season, which traditionally runs from October to March each year.

Members of the public are encouraged to have a storm ready bag containing items such as a portable radio with spare batteries, torch, first aid kit, candles and waterproof matches, important documents, waterproof bag for valuables and a copy of any home emergency plan.

Ms Dobson said residents should be prepared and stay up to date during an emergency.

"We encourage people to check the SES website and radio stations during an emergency. Medication is always important and a lot of people will have a quick ziplock bag to grab quickly in the event of an emergency," she said.

"People should also be thinking about something for their pets as well. Have a carry crate or transportable box for them ready to go.

"Storm season for the Camden Haven usually means thunderstorms, strong winds and fallen trees due to soft underlying soil. But you can never fully predict what weather we will get.

"Just be vigilant, watch what is happening, have a safety plan, have your animals and those irreplaceable things ready to go."

Ms Dobson the unit is prepared with 24 hour teams including day, night and standby teams.

"We have had three new members sign up recently and we're currently recruiting for people to join the SES," she said.

"Anyone interested can contact us through the SES website and we will get them job ready for the next storm season."

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that this year is likely to bring similar conditions to what was experienced last season.

NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said this means we could once again experience severe weather, including heavy rain and riverine and flash flooding.

"During the previous Storm Season, we experienced major floods right across the state," Commissioner York said.

"In fact, it wasn't long ago our volunteers responded to the major flooding event that overwhelmed communities across the Hawkesbury-Nepean, Hunter and Mid North Coast.

"That event alone saw us respond to more than 14,000 requests for assistance, including more than 1,000 flood rescues.

Commissioner York stressed it is because of events such as these that communities need to take preparing for storms and floods seriously.

"The more you can do now to prepare, the less likely you'll end up needing emergency assistance from our volunteers when these weather events hit," Commissioner York said.

"Our website has everything you could possibly need to learn about your risk of floods and the dangers they bring.

"It also highlights the simple, yet effective, things you can do ahead of time.

"From preparing an emergency evacuation kit, making sure your gutters and downpipes are clear, to planning for your animals, you can find all this information and more via ses.nsw.gov.au," she said.
