From the mayor's desk: Nominate a worthy sports person by Thursday, September 30 for awards

Final call for our sports stars to nominate for Port Macquarie Hastings Sports Awards

Our new normal is so different to the lifestyle we're used to living up here on the beautiful Mid-North Coast.

We're a community of togetherness - of activity, vibrancy, and also resilience.

It has been such a difficult time for community life as we all continue to adjust to COVID-safe living.

But it is wonderful to see the clever ways we're adapting events to a safe format, and against all odds, finding new ways to come together.

We would have had an opportunity to come together in October, to celebrate our wonderful sports community, at the Port Macquarie Hastings Sports Awards Ceremony.

But with COVID restrictions still lingering, the award winners will now be announced in short video presentations on council's and Port Macquarie Rotary Sunrise's social media.

Our community has a strong tradition of outstanding talent in sports, and it's one of the big contributors to our local community life.

It brings us together, fosters teamwork, and provides an opportunity for young people in our region to build relationships and excel.

It's important for us all to keep recognising and nurturing our local talents, even if we can't do this the same way we have done in the past.

If you know someone worthy of recognition of their talent or of their dedication, online nominations are open until Thursday, September 30.

Up to $7000 in prizes are on offer, across nine categories, to help our athletes achieve their elite sporting dreams.

This includes $4000 under the Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship, supported by the Mayor's Sporting Fund.

For the first time ever, competitors and volunteers who have made an impact in their chosen sports over the last two years have the opportunity to be recognised.

This is because the awards weren't held last year, so it's really great to see these achievements be celebrated at last.

The deadline is quickly approaching, so head to pmhc.nsw.gov.au/Sports-Awards for your chance to be in the running for a share of the prizes.

The winners will be announced between October 10-22. All the best to those nominated.
