The business owners of Goodwin Tennis operate in Laurieton, Lake Cathie and West Port Macquarie Tennis Clubs.
Laura Marsh, who runs the operations and marketing side of the business, said it was a fantastic surprise to feature in the regional awards during an ever-changing business environment.
"It was pretty amazing to be a finalist considering we only set out by ourselves five year ago with only five clients," she said.
"When we first started Matt was doing mobile coaching in Bonny Hills and Lake Cathie. He was going to schools and hiring courts. Then in September last year we bought the business at West Port Macquarie.
"It has been fantastic and we'll give it a red hot crack next year."
The key to have a successful micro business is being adaptable to change, according to Miss Marsh.
"I think micro business is about being adaptable. For example tennis is changing constantly and coaching is also changing constantly, the world changes," she said.
"Business owners like us need to be up to date with technology to make tennis more accessible and maintain community relationships. The most important aspect is that our customers become our friends and family."
