Police aerial night vision footage of the kangaroo showed it bounding around the pool while a handful of onlookers recorded the bizarre sight.
"911, do you need police, fire or medical?" the dispatcher asked in released audio from the call.
"I guess police, because there's a kangaroo in my apartment complex." the concerned resident responded.
The resident told the dispatcher that a kangaroo had been locked in the gated pool area. Hopper the roo, obligingly, did not jump over the fence to make his escape.
Hillborough County Sheriff's Office in Tampa, a district that has witnessed some of America's most bizarre crimes, was shocked to find the marsupial.
"A kangaroo? On the loose? You read that right!" Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook.
"Earlier this morning, our deputies responded to a call in Tampa for a loose kangaroo where they were able to trap in an apartment complex's pool area.
"Thanks to [Hillborough County] Agriculture Unit, the kangaroo was reunited with its owner after proper registrations for ownership were verified."
It is legal to keep a pet kangaroo in Florida with the correct permits and Hopper the roo was returned to his Tampa home.
