The weather eventually cleared last Tuesday and, even though the green was heavy and slow, bowls could be played. Our numbers were down, no doubt intending bowlers thought the green would be too wet. Thank goodness our green always drains perfectly.
The Club Major Singles Final between two top bowlers Joan Turnbull and Joy Brislane was enthralling. After an expected low scoring from both players, Joan received a couple of ends with multiple counts. Joy battled on valiantly, but, it was always going to be hard to retrieve points against such an experienced bowler. Congratulations to Joan for a well deserved win. Thank you President Chrystine for marking this important match.
Club Triples Championship first round matches are due to start on Tuesday, July 7. Team members are advised to watch the notice board for the date of their scheduled games. Another reminder about the AGM to be held on Monday, July 6, at 10.am.
Caught a glimpse of past president Gael McKenzie who made a brief visit during a break from her travels, and get well wishes go to Friendly Fridays Archie Barr also to Dulcie Miller. Many of us think of FF’s Roland Kerr with affection and hope he is adjusting to a new environment.
Faye Knox won the raffle, Janette Stewart and Joan Turnbull won vouchers.
Friendly Fridays (June19) was washed out.
The successful Bowl Over Cancer Day on Friday, June 12, raised $800. A big thank you to all who participated and especially to President Chrystine and her team for donating the many prizes.
Til next time.

Well bowls was certainly the winner last Wednesday as our green was filled to capacity with bowlers happy to see the sun shining. The green was running well under a sparkling winter’s sky and on every rink the games were keenly contested.
Winners were Brian Dixon and Kevin Thompson with Geoff Ireland at the helm, it was nearly a photo finish but they romped home in the last four ends. The runners up prize went to A. Bradford, Tony Jack and Max Blair.
The monthly Jackpot Triples was held on Thursday under overcast skies, which did not deter our bowlers. A couple of rinks had to be reduced to Pairs games due to illness. The jackpot did not go off so next month will see it rise to $400. Rink prizes for the day both went to a Pairs game on the same rink with Eric Mottlee and Ray Allan drawing the winners marble and Ted Carberry and Andrew Notata picking up the runners up prize (swabs have been taken!).
Saturday was mostly taken up with fours championship play but social bowls were also played with Dick Davies and Jock Wyper winners on the day.
Fours Championship play dominated Saturday with games played both morning and afternoon with Barrie Isaac, Les Knox, Eric Mottlee and Andrew Notara defeating Mark Atkins, Yves Brecard, Craig Paget and John Brown. Peter Loveday, John Slager, Terry Murphy and Gary Ruprecht beat Ray Allan, Greg Darcy, Howard Lacy and Darren Darcy. The afternoon session saw Chris Balaam, Richard McGowan, Ron Hale and Mick Murray dispatch Ron Bartholomew, Joe Smith, Warren Barnes and Ian Hilton while Loveday, Slager, Murphy and Ruprecht defeated Issac, Knox, Mottlee and Notara. Those afternoon winners will go on to contest the final of the Fours Championships.
Sunday dawned bright and clear with two Triples matches played. Mark Atkins, Yves Brecard and John Brown defeated Chris Balaam, Richard McGowan and Brian Rumble 26-21 while Peter Griffith, Gary Davis and Carl Paget won 27-18 over Les Knox, Mark Hammond and Bob Knox. (Paget sub. for W. Holland)
One Pairs match was played with Howard Lacy and Kevin Thompson defeating Brian Kirkwood and Darren Darcy 19-13.
Our regular social triples are on this afternoon with the popular “Cashpot Two Bowls Triples” returning on Saturday, get your name in by 11 am for a 12:30 start for both games.
Don’t forget, our AGM will be held on Sunday 9th August and nominations for all positions on the committee are now open, see the notice board.

Men’s bowling club elections are in full swing. Financial members are encouraged to vote at the appropriate times listed on the notice board. The Annual General Meeting will be held at 10am on Saturday, July 11, and again financial members are encouraged to attend and have a say in the future of our club.
Coming up is the Toohey’s Chairman’s Open 2 Bowls Triples tournament. Teams will play 3 games of 21 ends on Saturday, July 18 and 2 games of 21 ends on Sunday, July 19. Entry fee is $90 per team of three and includes a bar b que lunch on both days. Total prize money is $4000. Nominations will be accepted in order of arrival.
Two matches in the Men’s Triples’ championship have been played this week. B. Slogget, D. Brims and R. Fischer defeated J. Hendler, D. Pateman and F. Ryan to advance to a quarter final and A. Westman, R. Trow and J. Westman defeated W. Webster, E. Byrnes and J. Gillett in a second round match.
Several matches in the minor singles championship first round were played with the results as follows: M. Heslehurst defeated H. Weegan; W. Taylor defeated C. Chivers; G. Bateman defeated E. James; B Roberts defeated R. Eldridge; R. Fuller defeated A. Farrell; B. Duncombe defeated S. Webster and B. Kohut defeated T. Rutkowski. Second round matches are to be completed by this Sunday.
Monday morning mufti bowls and Thursday morning bowls were both played this week. Unfortunately the bowls organizer has been unable to supply the results.
On Saturday afternoon, the lucky winning rink was Bob Kohut and Ted Rutkowski. Lucky losing rink was Ken Seago and Peter Slattery. Brian Sloggett put in another wrong bias, Stewie “Magpie” Hodges had a fortunate day with lucky wicks, and Bruce Duncombe won a good dividend on the trifecta on the last race in Sydney.
Bradley Yates is progressing well with his fractured kneecap. Chicka Batts is itching to get back into bowls, and Bruce Hodge has won two raffles this week. Yes, it’s all happening at Lake Cathie!
Women
Rain again washed out all games on Tuesday 23, but there were a good number of ladies that turned out for the quarterly meeting later in the day.
The two semi finals of the Major Pairs were played last Friday under brilliant conditions. Defending champions, Jenny Roberts and Barbara Coey, again won their way through to the final when they defeated Susan Malzard and Di Westman. It will be Jannette Sloggett and Ros Hancox to square off against them in the final as they defeated Patricia Cahill and Di McLellan in their game. Good luck to both teams as this should be a close fought battle worthy of a final.
Also on Friday there were four games played in the minor pairs with the following winning their way through to the next round: Liz Fuller and Anne Lloyd defeated Ann Butlin and Pat Every; Isobel Schaumberg (sub) and Lorraine Sheargold (who played well in the unfamiliar role of skip) defeated Bev Hyland and F. Butterworth; Helene White and Nicole McCracken defeated Jillene Olsen (sub) and Marilyn Heslehurst (also in the unfamiliar role of skip); and in a game where the two teams were tied at 21 ends and therefore had to play one extra end, Fiona Brassey and Judy Green defeated Lynne Lawson and Margaret Waite.
On Saturday the sun continued to shine and another two games in the minor pairs was able to be played. Susan Malzard and Lynne Watson defeated Robyn Jones and Mary Simmonds in one game, and Beryl Barker and Di McLellan defeated Margaret Ann Killick and Jean Murphy in the other.
The social lucky rink winners for Saturday were Dawn Turner, June Webster and Yvonne Howard, with the team of Robyn Jones and Mary Simmonds being the lucky runners up.
The Classic Triples being played at North Haven was washed out on Monday but went ahead on Tuesday and we were well represented with one of our teams taking out fourth place. They were Margaret Rowsell (lead), Barbara Smith (second) and Marilyn Dewson (skip). Well done girls, great bowling.
Don’t forget to regularly check the carnival entries in the ladies room to avoid the disappointment of entries being too late to get a look in. Our Christmas in July Fours Carnival is only a couple of weeks off and plans are forging well ahead with this looking to be a cracker of a two days, let’s pray for the weather to do its part as well.
Another up and coming carnival here at our own club is the Toohey’s Chairman’s Open 2 Bowl Triples Tournament to be played Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July. You will notice that this year it has been thrown “open” and therefore mixed or same sex teams may enter. There will be 3 games on Saturday and 2 games (all 21 ends) on Sunday with the entry fee of $90 per team covering play and a bar b que lunch on both days. So gather up partners and/or friends and enter a team. Maybe some of the ladies can throw down a quiet challenge to their male counterparts and make it really interesting. However, the club will not be responsible for follow up divorce proceedings. This could be avoided if the men would only listen to us, then there would not be any problems, would there ladies? All said tongue in cheek, of course.
There is a list up in the ladies room for a trip to Old Bar with the Travelling Bowlers, if you are interested. Cost is $30 for the day.
The next Trade table is to be held next Tuesday 7 July. This is also when the entries for the Major Triples close with the first day of play to be on or before Friday 24 July.
The Annual General Meeting is to be held on the 21 July and the sheet is up in the ladies room for nominations to fill positions. Nominate someone today with the view to filling all positions so we can continue to forge ahead and be the successful club we are.
Coaching for members and also for anyone who thinks they might like to learn, is available. Times are after 1.30 Tuesdays and after 10am Saturdays or other times by arrangement. Just ring Margaret to book a spot on 65863187.
The selectors’ roster for Saturday 4 July is Susan and the kitchen roster for Tuesday 7 is Anne Freeman, Patricia Gibbons and Robyn Jones.
Lastly, a thought for those who are feeling off colour and not able to bowl at the moment. Know that we are missing your faces on the greens. It was good to see Dawn back with us again and also to hear that Lorraine has a full plaster on her leg and is only weeks away from being fully recovered. It’s been much quieter Lorraine, although Liz makes up for your noise around the raffle table and is doing a great job while you, her offsider, is out of action.

Once again I have proved that “Shultzie” knows nothing. Present Committee is still going and will be until Saturday July 4, so last week wasn’t the last from them. The brain doesn’t take into account what the fingers have typed.
Firstly I would like to offer my personal apology to Freda Chinnery for my badly worded piece last week. The “name” I meant was “Shield” as some people had asked me earlier on the day I was writing it if it was a special day open only to some or could any member or guest play. The message I was trying to get across was that it was open to all.
We did have a great day for the Chinnery Shield and the result was that the men were (once again) victorious over the women by 139 shots to 131. Better luck (but not much better) next year ladies.
Earlier in the week results were:
Tuesday morning - washed out; Tuesday afternoon - still raining.Wednesday, hooray at last, Triples Wiggly Tail Butchery voucher winners. On green 2 Bob Robards, David Wright & Alex Kair, runners-up Roy Johnston, Brian Johnston & John F Smith. Winners on Green 3 Glen Thomson, Bob Lunny & John Coleman, runners-up Steve Ryan, Doug Porter & Richard Knox.
Friday mixed fours (great to see the numbers increasing - keep it up). First place on the day went to Pat Micallef, Ron Church, P Micallef & Wal Coull, 2nd Joan Knight, H Friend, M Friend & Kevin Thomson, 3rd Noreen Beattie, Arthur Stewart, Bev Treaseder & Alan Beattie.
Saturday Triples Green 1 winners Alan White, Kevin Cooney & Geoff Burr, runners-up Don Colyer, Ray Hennessy & Aub Schulstad. Green 2 winners Cliff Hams, Bill Soutar & Ian Collins, runners-up W Wahlstedt, Roy Johnston & Wal Garvan.
Only one of the semi-finals in the triples was played owing to work commitments and Dave Richardson’s team was successful over Gary Martin’s I think (but do not know) that the other one will be played mid week and hopefully, the final will be on next weekend. Keep your eyes on the board.
Coming events:
July 5 - Nominations for mixed 4’s open;
July 12 Mixed pairs start - as far as I know at present, so watch the board.
July 25 - Nominations for mixed 4’s close.
July 26 - Sausage sizzle - this will be the first for the new committee so please make them feel as though they are going to be supported and come along and enjoy the fun.
July 4 - Annual General Meeting - by the time you read this voting will have closed and the invitation is out to all those who have shown an interest to be here for a 9.30am sharp start.
It seems that nobody else seems interested in taking over the best job on the committee so you will probably have to put up with me for some time yet. The biggest loss for now is the cook for the “sausage sizzles.” Barry Kirkland wants to call it a day but all we can do is try (all of us that is) to convince him to continue - doesn’t he do a great job.
Until next time “Shultzie.”
