Camden Haven Community College established the garden in Apex Park Laurieton and coordinator Tony Carroll is very much looking forward to tutors conducting workshops and hearing from the public about what they would like to see happening in the garden. The opening will take place on July 23 at 10am.
The garden’s open day and preliminary workshop will be held Saturday July 31and will include demonstrations on no-dig gardening and soil testing. Mr Carroll said people are invited to fill out a questionnaire at the open day and have their say on the future of the community garden.
“Thanks to funding from the Commonwealth Government as part of the Teaching and Learning Capital Fund and approval from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, we have constructed these five raised garden beds which will be used for both horticulture training courses and by members of the community,” Mr Carroll said.
Camden Haven Community College manager Joneen Troup said the gardens had received plenty of positive feedback from the community so far and would provide a healthy gathering place for local green thumbs and anyone keen to learn more about gardening.
“We hope to run a series of workshops during the years and will tailor them to meet the demand from the community. That’s why we would encourage people to attend this preliminary workshop (open day) and let us know what subjects they would like to see included in future workshops. This will be an opportunity to make new friends and take away some great ideas for backyard gardens,” Mrs Troup said.
The preliminary workshop is free and a sausage sizzle will be available for a small charge.
To assist with catering arrangements those interested should contact Sally or Tony at Camden Haven Community College on 6559 6699 by July 23.
