In 1946 the grand final battle was between Herons Creek and Laurieton - of the NSW Country Rugby Football League. It was a grudge match we hear. Herons Creek won the prize and players were presented with handsome blazers for their efforts.
Earlier this month one of these blazers was framed and presented to Herons Creek Public School.
Douglas Keith Stace was 17 when he played in that Herons Creek’s premiership-winning side. He went on to join the Australian Army and settled in Adelaide, married and had six children. All the while keeping his prized blazer in mint condition.
Better known as Keith, Mr Stace passed away two years ago at the age of 80. His wife Audrey, their children and his siblings decided the blazer should be returned home. Mr Stace and his brothers and sisters all attended Herons Creek school.
“We thought it would be a nice gesture [to present it to the school],” said Mr Stace’s sister Kaye Knight.
“He was born in Herons Creek, educated and played football here. It was in beautiful condition.
“We went to the 125th anniversary of the school and saw all the memorabilia. This is another piece for the school that the children can learn about.”
