Our open mens crew and our junior mens crew left the SES boat ramp in port macquarie at 8:15am and arrived at bonny hills just before 11am. The crews had to navigate some particularly nasty surf off the bar at town beach and again on arrival at rainbow beach but both crews faired well.
They completed the 25km row in under 3 hours and were thoroughly exhausted. In a close and friendly contest it was the open mens crew who hit the beach first ahead of the junior crew. Both sweeps were impressed with their rowers attitude and endurance in the marathon training session.
It is unknown whether this feat has been attempted before. Mayor Peter Besserling commented that it was an incredible effort. The two crews are in training for the national titles, the Aussies, in Perth in April.
On Friday night our club will be hosting a fundraising night for our Aussies touring team at Wauchope-Bonny Hills SLSC.
It is going to be one hell of a night with live music, raffles, games and prizes. Proceeds from the night will go towards assistingwith the costs of travelling to Perth for our awesome club competitors.
It is a fun and informal evening open to the public so come along and enjoy a dinner and drinks at WBHSLSC on Friday 21st March from 5pm. A big thankyou to our sponsors, Brian Hollis, the Clingellefer family, First National Real Estate North Haven, the Fat Fish restaurant, Samsung, Mambo and all the local businesses and members that have supported us this season and over the past few years.
Friday afternoon will also see the unveiling of the Lloyd Flesser surfboat that has been beautifully restored by the Hastings Men Shed at Wauchope. Boat captain Tony Kee will present a cheque to Brian Jones of the Hastings mens shed in thanks for the efforts to restore the boat. The unveiling and presentation will occur at the Wauchope Bonny Hills surfboat shed at 5pm. Come along and share some stories about the Lloyd Flesser boat and a cold drink if you have time on Friday prior to the fundraising night upstairs!
A big congratulations to our club competitors that competed at the NSW masters championships at Umina on the weekend. Also well done to the Wauchope Bonny Hills under 19 mens crew and under 23 womens crew that were selected to represent the North Coast at the Best of the Best carnival at Ocean Beach. Sweep of both crews Steve Monaghan said that borh crews were unable to attend the event but were both honoured to have been selected this year.
