Since 2001 Lorna and the Laurieton Community Cemetery Friends Group looked after the Shelter shed but age and health caused the Group to disband in August 2013.
After reading the news item a Rotarian raised the issue at a Rotary Club of Laurieton Dinner Meeting and as a consequence the Rotary Community Service Director, Rotarian Alan Anderson spoke to Mrs. Lorna Shumack about the ongoing shelter shed maintenance with the view in mind that Rotary may be able to help.
A meeting was arranged between Mrs. Shumack, representatives from Rotary and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to ascertain how the shed could be adequately maintained in the future.
After the on-site meeting and a necessary Inspection by a qualified builder to determine costs and related issues such as Council involvement, the matter was referred to the Rotary Club of Laurieton Board of Directors for a determination. After reviewing all matters pertaining to the project and the fact that Council agreed to supply all the maintenance materials, Rotary will commence work after Easter to restore the Shelter Shed to the desired standard.
Rotary President, John Saunders said he was delighted that Rotary is able to contribute in a small way to maintain this very important structure at the Laurieton Cemetery. We should all thank Lorna Shumack and her team of helpers for their past endeavours and the fact she brought the matter to the attention of the public.
The ongoing maintenance of the Shelter Shed will be reviewed by Rotary later this year.
