It was a day for reconnecting with family and community. "Newer" Herons Creek folk and those whose families were pioneers in the fledgling community way-back-when, rejoiced that their stories and history would be preserved forever in the trail of over 30 signs (that's just stage 1).
The project was community driven and funded by sponsors, donations and grants along with the priceless time of the hardworking committee.
Among the pioneer families honoured in the trail were: the Ducks, Cranes, Swans, Wade in Herons Creek (get it?).
Special guests in attendance were MC Cameron Marshall from ABC Radio, mayor Peter Besseling and MPs Leslie Williams and David Gillespie.
"Being proud of your space, your place and your community is something we should all do," said Dr Gillespie in his congratulations to the community of Herons Creek for realising the establishment of the heritage trail.
"If we don't take the time to remember and recognise our history it will get lost in the sands of time."
Leslie Williams also praised the trail's "founding father" Martin Parish, the committee and the community.
"The fact that you have your local politicians and so many people braving this freezing wind to mark this day shows how important history is," Mrs Williams said.
"The trail is not only about the timber mills and steam ships, but the families. The trail is a testament to Martin Parish and the committee. Martin started the journey by restoring the historic church in Herons Creek then came up with the fantastic idea for the signs. He recruited the community stalwarts to support and help make the trail come to life."
The trail even details the early life of one of Australia's most famous movie makers, Baz Luhrmann.
Baz sent an email to be read at the launch event. He wrote fondly of childhood memories, people and places he remembered in Herons Creek.
The committee is already planning stage 2 of the heritage project, two more trails - The Cedar Way and Great North Way.
