Jessica Kate filmed and took photos of a brown snake at Black Head Beach this morning as it slithered past a man sitting on a table.

"The snake just came along the hill at Black Head Beach amongst about 50 people sitting and having lunch," she said.

"It went all the way up towards the surf club. We followed it warning everyone to move out of its way as everyone was sitting down on blankets all along the hill having lunch.

"It went down into the big drain pipe just before the club."

On Friday Tuncurry man Ken Wilson saw a death adder while walking his dog on Tuncurry beach.

He wrote to the Great Lakes Advocate about his experience. 

"It was the warmest morning this spring as I walked the dog down for a swim about 10am," he said.

"Returning about quarter of an hour later I was startled by nearly walking on a coiled snake in the open, right in the middle of the sand track.     

"Coiled, it was probably 300mm in diameter.

"As I stopped about half a metre short, the snake quickly slithered off into the scrub.

"It had a very distinctive tail, although I've only seen two or three death adders before, I was sure of the type, as the body is fairly uniform, but tapering off into a grub-like tail."

Last month Forster Veterinary Hospital senior vet Cameron Hendricks treated five dogs for snake bites. 

He said because it was so hot he expected a high amount of snake activity this year. 

“The majority of snake bites happen in summer, when people are out with dogs,” Dr Hendricks said.

“It's hot, so people are out with their dogs. It's also when snakes are most active."
