Sydney woman who died at Dragon Dreaming music festival was a 'shy girl' with a 'curious mind'

The sister of a Sydney woman who died at a music festival at the weekend has pleaded for stricter drug use monitoring to prevent further tragedies besetting festival goers.

The 23-year-old woman, identified by her online social media accounts as Anneke Vo, was found dead at 5.30am on Sunday at the Dragon Dreaming Festival in Wee Jasper near Lake Burrinjuck, about 50 kilometres south-west of Yass.

On-site medical personnel performed CPR but were unable to revive her, police said.

Police were told that she had complained to her friends that she was not feeling well on Saturday.

Ms Vo, a budding writer, had joined fellow revellers for the four-day music festival held on farmland about a three-and-a-half hour drive from her home in Berala in Sydney's west.

She described herself on her personal blog as a "professional daydreamer" and a "shy girl with a curious mind".

Although the cause of her death is unknown, police confirmed that she did not suffer from any medical conditions, and said they had made 78 drug detections at the festival over the weekend.

A post to the festival's Facebook page from a woman who identified herself as Ms Vo's sister also suggested drugs were involved.

"My sis Anneke Fidelity Vo said goodbye to my dad when he dropped her off [at] sydney central bus station on thursday to attend this festival & she never came home !!! [sic]", Kykika Nguyen posted on the Dragon Dreaming Facebook page on Monday.

"A tragic loss to our family that we wish will never happen upon anyone else! Just hoping more strictly monitor of drug abuse and more looking out for each other festival goers ! [sic]" Ms Nguyen wrote.

The page's administrator responded, posting: "Kykika, we offer our sincerest condolences to you, your family and friends. The thoughts of all our staff, volunteers and patrons are you you".

The comments have since been deleted.

In the lead up to the event, Dragon dreaming Festival organisers advised revellers that police would be targeting drink drivers and illicit drug use.

Event organisers also provided a drug and alcohol screening service at the exit gate.

On Tuesday one of Ms Vo's Facebook friends. "RIP darling ... [We] celebrated your belated 23rd birthday only the weekend before with an event of your choice".

"[I] Remember your joy as we say Happy Birthday with an adapted cake you called adorable ... you were my future daughter in law you can't not be here any more ! ! Your beauty, intelligence depth & wisdom will be SO missed [sic]," the post read.

Dragon Dreaming Festival director Shane Russell expressed his condolences to the family in a statement on Tuesday morning.

"The thoughts of all our staff and volunteers are with them during this extremely difficult time," the statement read.

"Dragon Dreaming considers the safety of patrons a priority and we will continue to work closely with all authorities to determine exactly what happened in this situation," Mr Russell said.

The event organisers also appealed to the media to "avoid speculation".

On Sunday Superintendent Zoran Dzevlan made his objections to the festival clear.

"It is tragic that a young life has been lost and that a family is mourning the life of their daughter," Superintendent Dzevlan said.

"I didn't want this event to happen in the first place," Superintendent Dzevlan said.

"We put our objections forward to council and as a result of these drug detections, and the tragic death of a young lady, we will again be putting our recommendations forward for this event not to take place in our community," he said.

Police also executed 20 positive random drug tests among festival goers leaving the event on Sunday and charged three people with supply.

"Once the police have obtained all their statistics from the weekend they will be putting a recommendation to the council not to approve the event next year," Superintendent Dzevlan said.

The Dragon Dreaming Festival website describes the event as a celebration of "art, music, nature, and the freedom of self-expression in a safe, family-friendly gathering".

As well as music acts, the event hosts permaculture seminars, yoga classes, a film festival and children's activities.

Several festival goers have contacted Fairfax Media to report that festival organisers and on site medical staff responded appropriately, and with sensitivity, to the tragedy.

The circumstances surrounding the woman's death were being investigated, and police were preparing a brief for the Coroner.
