The generous donation was made to the Laurieton residential care home in June and is already being enjoyed by male residents, their families and grandkids alike.
Included in the starter kit were items such as a portable radio and a wheel barrow, as well as a tool box containing small tools like hammers, screwdrivers and an assortment of electrical equipment.
Men’s Sheds act as a quiet sanctuary for reflection, as well as an outlet for older men to socialise and to work on meaningful projects, allowing some time to reminisce and connect with friends.
Laurieton Director Care Services, George Fotoulis, is delighted by the generous gift, saying that it’s already attracting a lot of attention at the home.
“This fantastic starter kit has given us the opportunity to start planning the construction of our very own men’s shed and the financial savings now means we can use the extra savings on our shed.” he said.
“We’ve seen a great deal of interest from residents already, with many commenting that they look forward to getting their hands on the tools and that it (spending time in the shed, tinkering and making things) takes them back to their younger days,” George said.
Paynter Dixon Constructions donated the starter kit with the aim of contributing to the set-up of a Men’s Shed, which they hoped would allow participants to connect with their past lives in the present.
Sadie Burling, Business Manager at Paynter Dixon, is looking forward to seeing the Men’s Shed grow and develop into a central hub for the male residents at the Laurieton home.
“Sponsoring such a prize allows Paynter Dixon to give a little back to the community,” she said.
“We hope the residents enjoy the tools and are able to take a walk down memory lane whilst building some amazing pieces.” she said.
Whiddon Laurieton would like to thank Paynter Dixon Constructions for their kind and generous donation.
