Going hand-in-hand with summer in Australia is bushfire season.

On September 10 the Bonny Hills brigade is holding an open day as part of Get Ready Weekend at the station on Jungarra Crescent between 10am and 2pm.

At the station you’ll be able to learn more about the RFS, check out the equipment and fire trucks, get to know the volunteers and receive valuable advice on formulating your plan ahead of bushfire season.

Brigade captain Nigel Sherrard said fire fighters will be on hand to discuss bush fire survival plans, property and personal preparedness, fire mitigation strategies and how the community can best stay informed about bush fires.

Local residents will have the opportunity to look around the station, meet “Big Red” and “Little Red” the brigade’s two trucks and learn about what happens when the brigade is called to incidents.

Bonny Hills Rural Fire Services is also seeking new members and those interested in volunteering are encouraged to come down on Saturday and have a chat.

“Volunteering with the RFS is a great way to get involved with the community, meet new people and learn valuable skills which will not only assist you in your volunteer role, but in day-to-day life and workplaces,” captain Sherrard said.

“For young people, the RFS is a fantastic place to learn from mentors, work as part of a team, gain skills from nationally recognised training initiatives and develop the capacity to respond to emergency incidents.”

Volunteering with your local emergency service is an active way to give back to your community and play a vital role in keeping people safe throughout the year.
