Brenton, who is the Manning Valley’s resident snake removalist, said that it’s been a quiet start to spring so far.
“This time last year we were doing two (snake removals) a day on average,” he explained.
“This year we’re only doing about three or four a week.”
One of these 2016 rescues was a five-foot brown snake which Brenton visited the Manning River Times office with, following its rescue from a nearby Taree residence.
Brenton said that a single drop of venom from an eastern brown was potent enough to kill 16 men, and as such the reptiles had to be treated with respect.
Brenton said that handling the venomous creature “gets the adrenaline going” even for an experienced handler.
He said that it was important for anyone who comes into contact with a snake this season to stay calm, keep their distance, and try to avoid it.
