In response to the article on September 28 entitled “Electorates back marriage equality”, I would like to comment that I am not surprised that most city and suburban electorates appear to be in favour of the proposed Bill, as there could well be a preponderance of young and also “gay” people in those areas.

However, I have many friends and acquaintances. I have not heard that any of them in this area have been surveyed, and I can be very sure that most of them would be against “marriage equality” as most of them, like me, believe that “marriage” is a union between a man and a woman.
People obviously have the right to choose how they will live their lives. And the law has already given many rights and privileges to couples who choose to live with a partner of the same sex.
However, I believe that calling it “marriage” is a misnomer. There surely are other names which could be adopted – “consenting adults”, “partners” – or whatever. Please keep the terminology correct. It is not “marriage”.
Traditionalists also have rights, and their rights ad beliefs also need to be respected.
