The donation was possible thanks to support for the Byabarra Community Hall Trust’s Beer Appreciation Evening in October.
Trustee Brian Carpenter said the annual event was always well supported by Hastings residents and sponsors, but this year’s fundraiser had a special significance.
“The evening is always memorable and in the past has helped the Trust maintain and improve our community hall,” he said.
“We made the decision this year, however, to donate the money raised on the night to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute.”
Mr Carpenter said the donation was made in memory of Kate Owen, who with husband Al owned and operated the Black Duck Brewery, a long-time sponsor of our Beer Appreciation Evenings.
Kate, who sadly passed away in August, was a staunch supporter of local businesses, people and events. A donation to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute which supports local people and their families was a fitting tribute.
“The evening was a tremendous success, due to the support of the community and our partners – the brewers.
“The night was an opportunity to sample some premium local, national and international products. And it was a fitting tribute to a friend who is missed by many.”
Mid North Coast Cancer Institute Nursing Unit Manager Jenny Baroutis thanked the Byabarra community for its support.
“I know the evening attracts visitors from right across the Hastings, but it was the Byabarra community who decided this year to direct the proceeds to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute and we are extremely grateful,” Ms Baroutis said.
“Cancer touches many lives. We are fortunate here in the Hastings to have an extraordinary facility supported by an extraordinary community.”
Mr Carpenter said the Beer Appreciation Evening would not have been the success that it was without the support of Black Duck Brewery, The Little Brewery Company, Hunter Beer Co., Murray’s Brewery, Coopers Brewery, Stone and Wood Brewing, Asahi, Cellarbrations at the Settlers Inn, IGA Wauchope (Timbertown) and IGA Liquor.
The Byabarra Community Hall Trustees are now preparing for their next community get-together – a high tea to celebrate the hall’s 90th birthday on December 3. Anyone wanting further information should contact Julie McLeod on 6587 1134.
