“I was given a Brownie 127 box camera when I was about 12-years-old in the old black and white days.
“There was an old German lady who lived a few streets away who used to develop the photos a little bit cheaper than the chemist, she also taught me quite a few things about photography.”
The area where I live here in Dunbogan has to be one of the most picturesque places in Australia.
- Amateur photographer Peter John Laing
He has lived at Dunbogan for a little over 30 years and moved here from Bathurst where he ran a hotel for five years. Before that he worked as an industrial chemist in Sydney specialising in printing inks and coatings for the packaging industry.
After the box Brownie camera he progressed to a Pentax Spotmatic F and experimented with different lenses, then on to slide photos and time exposures.
“I guess the thing I like about photography is that I can capture a moment, a memory ,a feeling or something of beauty and keep it or share it.”
Being a keen fisherman Peter is often up very early and this gives him the perfect opportunity to capture sunrises and wildlife photos.
“Sunrises are a favourite subject of mine as there are never two the same and the colours are just sensational, not only that but it’s the best part of the day.
“The area where I live here in Dunbogan has to be one of the most picturesque places in Australia - making taking photos enjoyable.”
Asked to pick his favourite photo, Peter, like most photographers, struggles to narrow it down.
“If I had to pick, it would be one of my family, however I do have a few sunrises that I think are special.”
