Jo Jo will play on Saturday June 24, with a little help from her friends Lucie Thorne and Hamish Stuart.
To honour this extraordinary life of music-making, the three firm friends and musical comrades have set out on a tour which will see them play in dozens of their favourite venues across Australia.
A passionate exponent of the power of love and music, Jo Jo Smith is deeply revered by fans and peers alike.
As Thorne puts it, “You’ve either experienced the joy and wonder that is being in the same room as this woman singing and playing, or you haven’t heard her yet!”
Jo Jo first hit the stage in 1967, singing and playing drums in her Motown band in Dunedin. She went on to be the first woman ever to perform at the Byron Bay Blues Festival, as well as the go-to backing singer for everyone from Renee Geyer to Marcia Hines.
One of the grooviest guitar players and drummers you will ever encounter, Jo Jo Smith is also a songwriter of great depth and beauty; her music traverses soul, blues and roots with an effortless grace and energy.
Lucie Thorne has been recording and touring with legendary drummer Hamish Stuart for nearly a decade. Lucie's textural guitar style blends seamlessly with Hamish’s dynamic drums and percussion, providing a rich soundscape for the warmth and poetry of Lucie's songs.
Friends for many years, Lucie and Jo Jo are huge fans of each other’s work. They have teamed up many times, and after a gig together last year, around the kitchen table, Jo Jo mentioned that 2017 would mark her 50th year as a working musician. Right then and there the pair started brewing ideas for a huge celebratory tour.
Concert-goers can expect to hear, see and feel the chemistry between all three artists, in various combinations, as they offer up originals, as well as their favourite covers.
