Since the mid 1970s the legacy members have been able to support local WW1 and WW2 widows with affordable housing. In Laurieton 12 single bedroom units were completed in 1977 on Castle Street.
The award will recognise a Corporate Manager that exemplifies outstanding community service ethos, dedication and commitment to their communities.
Since they were first established the units have also provided affordable housing for the ex service community and people with disabilities who are over 16-years-old.
The service also helps woman living in the Camden Haven community who in most cases could not afford normal rental rates.
“We provide a safe community with companionship to the residents who in many instances may be not only be financially challenged but socially isolated,” director Barry Coops said.
The Port Macquarie Hastings Legacy also arranges morning teas, outings and a Christmas party where the residents can socialise.
Members of the The Port Macquarie Hastings Legacy have built and maintained the units from proceeds of rental payments and fundraising in the Camden Haven area.
“This maintenance over the years was done completely by our volunteers, however, it is now done through a combination of payments to tradespeople, staff and volunteers,” chairman Ken Fahey said.
Over the years work has been done on paths, resurfacing of the road way, re-roofing and refurbishments of units.
Mr Fahey said he hopes the legacy will be able to continue to provide support for people who have been impacted by recent wars including Iraq and Afghanistan.
Finalists will be presented and winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday November 10.
The annual Legacy Badge Week Appeal runs from Sunday, August 27 until Saturday, September 2.
Port Macquarie Hastings Legacy Club volunteers will sell badges and other merchandise in Port Macquarie, Camden Haven and Wauchope on Wednesday, August 30, Thursday, August 31 and Friday, September 1.
Community support will enable the club to continue to help over 500 widows and families of servicemen in the area, who have given their lives or their health on operational service or subsequently.
