Operation Slow Down, the state’s long weekend road safety campaign, started at 12.01am on Friday September 29 and will continue until 11.59pm tonight (Monday, October 2).
Double demerits are in place over the entire long-weekend for all speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt and motorcycle-helmet offences.
Day 3 of Operation Slow Down saw police issue 1,486 speeding infringement notices and 26 PCA charges were laid yesterday (Sunday October 1).
Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver said as the long weekend winds down, motorists should plan their travel home wisely and obey the road rules.
“We have already seen a number drivers speeding, taking unnecessary risks and driving dangerously,” he said.
“Unfortunately there have been five deaths on our roads this long weekend, plus another two on private property.
“Our message is simple: slow down, choose your ride wisely and follow the road rules to ensure you and others return home safely.”
