Thomas Mesaglio came across what he originally thought was an Elegant Sea Snake at North Haven Beach on Monday, September 24.
However he since believes he made a mistake in identifying the snake as an Elegant Sea Snake.
Thomas showed the images of the snake to a number of herpetologists and one believed it was an olive-headed sea snake.
After viewing images of olive-headed sea snakes, Thomas said he agrees with this identification.
According to Oceana, the olive sea snake is the most common sea snake along the northern coast of Australia.
“The olive sea snake is a highly venomous snake that actively hunts small to medium sized fishes and benthic invertebrates, including prawns and crabs,” it is reported via the Oceana website.
Thomas has been visiting the Camden Haven every few months for his entire life.
“I’ve spent a lot of time on North Haven Beach,” he said.
Thomas enjoys beachcombing and tries to partake in the activity at least once a week.
“I do all my beachcombing either up here (Camden Haven) when I can or around the northern beaches when I’m back in Sydney,” he said.
Thomas is currently in the process of writing a field guide to beachcombing between Sydney and Port Macquarie.
