Terry Memory featured in the Camden Haven Courier in November 2008 after he helped rescue a man at Grants Beach.
“When Terry Memory of West Haven went for an evening walk along Grants Beach at North Haven he never expected it to turn into a life-risking experience,” it was reported.
“The 61-year-old deserves more than a medal after braving a 400 metre swim through the surf to help a man on a floating device back to shore.”
“I was power walking from North Haven Beach to Grants Headland but when I got back here (Grants Beach) I saw a policeman and a crowd,” Mr Memory said.
“I noticed a man out there in trouble drifting further out to sea so I said to the policeman I’d go after him.
“He must have thought I was a silly old bugger because I got half way there and it was like an Irish joke...I thought I was going to have to swim back,” he laughed.
“I wouldn’t consider myself a strong swimmer, but it’s not until you go out that far you realise how unfit you are. “
Mr Memory swam on because he simply didn’t want to leave Laurieton man Tony Skeates (52-years-old) ‘out there by himself’.
The two men made it back to shore.
