The Lawyers batted first but were easily dismissed by the Diamonds pitcher Marli Boller, who struck out the first two batters and then secured a pop up fly to shortstop for the third out. Not to be out done the Lawyers’ pitcher Chrissie Andrews dismissed the first two batters, after making a double play when she took a fly ball and then caught the first base runner short, as she desperately tried to return to her base.
The second innings was no better for the Lawyers who loaded the bases with only one out, only to have the final two batters strike out. This proved costly for the Lawyers as they were punished after making three errors and when a wild pitch got away from catcher Nat Middleton the Diamonds secured five runs. The Lawyers were in real trouble now, down 0/5.
Four runs in the third innings after safe hits were recorded by Chrissie Andrews, Fiona Ewan, Nat Middleton and Lily Andrews. The Diamonds hit back when two Lawyers’ errors and a safe hit to Jo Pretty allowed them to score 2 runs. Although making the score a more respectable 4/8 the Lawyers appeared to be in real difficulty.
The fourth innings saw the Lawyers score one run after leadoff batter Jordan Grieve cracked a three base hit to centre field. The Diamonds responded with two runs. This innings was finished when Sarah Jennings took a pressure catch at left field when the Diamonds looked certain to score two more runs.
The last innings started with the Lawyers trailing 5/10. Staring defeat straight in the eye the Lawyers responded like the warriors they are. Lead off batters Nat Middleton and Charlie Grieve both made first base and Lily Andrews had a safe hit to load the bases. Then followed safe hits by Jordan Grieve, Sarah Jennings and Amanda Badger. This saw the Lawyers take a 12/10 lead.
However, the Diamonds had one more turn at bat and the Lawyers only 8 minutes to get three outs. The Lawyers retired the first two batters but when Jo Bonny smashed a home run to bring the score to 12/11 the pressure was really on the Lawyers. The tying run was on second base when Sue Blain thumped the ball to shortstop Jordan Grieve. Jordan moved quickly to her left, gathered the ball, looked up, saw the runner trying to advance to third, turned sharply and tagged the runner finishing the game, with a jubilant Lawyers team running out winners by one run.
Injured captain Georgia Boland who encouraged her team all game, said it was by far the team’s most exciting game of the season.
