GAZE: Star lovers are encouraged to come to the Sky Stories event.

If you love looking at the stars then mark August 16 in your diary.

Sky Stories is on at Sancrox Reserve on Rawdon Island Road from 5pm until 8pm.

It's being hosted by Hastings Secondary College, Wauchope High School and other community groups.

Science teacher Nettie Riethmuller said it was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come along and enjoy a night under the stars.

"Everyone is curious about the stars in the night sky and we host Sky Stories as a way for people in the community to learn what they are looking at when they go star gazing," Ms Riethmuller said.

"In our first year we had about 100 people come and now we have over 500 people come to look at the stars together.

"This year we are also focusing on the Aboriginal perspective of star gazing and really including all of their incredible knowledge into our event."

PhD candidate and guest speaker Robert Fuller will talk about the cultural astronomy of the saltwater Aboriginal peoples of the Australian East Coast.

Ms Riethmuller said people will learn everything about the night sky, including how to read sky maps and how to identify moon craters and star clusters.

"People can bring their own telescope or view the night sky through giant telescopes provided," she said.

"You will also see Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the the majestic full moon.

"Experts will be on hand to answer questions about astronomy and help people with their technology to explore the stars.

"Bring the whole family for an exciting fun-filled evening and learn how the night sky connects to Dreamtime stories past, present and future."

On the night there will be a bush tucker tastings, free sausage sizzle, soup, barista made hot drinks and a selection of cakes and slices. They are available courtesy of Hastings Secondary College hospitality students.

Entry is by a gold coin.
